At South Omaha Medical we have teamed up with Vantari Genetics to provide our patients with the most up to date services and health exams available. Our simple 1 minute cheek swab can determine how a person metabolizes and interacts with medications. The results will show us what medications are most effective for a person and will cause the least amount of side effects. This improves our accuracy for treatments and diminishes the likeliness of ineffectual prescriptions. The field that encompasses this is known as pharmacogenomics.

What is pharmacogenics?

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs. This relatively new field combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to develop effective, safe medications and doses that will be tailored to a person’s genetic makeup.

Many drugs that are currently available are “one size fits all,” but they don’t work the same way for everyone. It can be difficult to predict who will benefit from a medication, who will not respond at all, and who will experience negative side effects (called adverse drug reactions). Adverse drug reactions are a significant cause of hospitalizations and deaths in the United States.

With the knowledge gained from the Human Genome Project, researchers are learning how inherited differences in genes affect the body’s response to medications.

These genetic differences will be used to predict whether a medication will be effective for a particular person and to help prevent adverse drug reactions.

How does the test work?

Vantari Labs

By combining scientific evidence and state-of-the-art DNA analysis technology, we can offer our patients a high level of service.

Through the study of Pharmacogenomics we can analyze the genetic variations that influence the response to medications. Genes encode enzymes that are responsible for drug metabolism provoking a cellular response to medications. Each individual’s genetic profile is different; therefore each individual’s response to medication varies.

The Swab

Buccal swab technology enables our physicians to obtain a DNA sample in a non-invasive manner. The specimen is shipped directly to Vantari CLIA certified genetic laboratory for processing. The specimen and your personal information are protected by our compliance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act).

The Report

The report will be sent back securely to our office and we will go over it with you at your next appointment, if required. The report will give us more information about how your current medications are affecting your body, or how future medications could affect your body. The science of Pharmacogenomics can help clinicians provide the correct medication, at the right dose, and at the right time!

How does the billing work?

Billing

Pharmacogenomics insurance coverage

If your clinician has determined that you would benefit from this genetic test and provides basic supporting documentation, many commercial insurance plans and Medicare reimburse for Vantari genetic testing.

Explanation Of Benefits (EOB)

After your clinician receives the report, Genetic Technological Innovations, DBA Vantari Genetics, begins working closely with your insurance provider to process your claim. You will likely receive an Explanation of Benefits from your insurance company explaining what medical treatments and/or services were paid for on their behalf. Please note: THIS IS NOT A BILL

Patient Billing Policies

When Vantari files an insurance claim and a balance is due, you may receive a statement. If you receive a statement or have questions about your statement we encourage you to reach out to our billing department at 1-844-VANTARI.

An experienced billing specialist will be happy to assist you.
