Ketamine treats people at risk of suicide

Depression is a common, severe and potentially life-threatening syndrome. There are emerging medical studies demonstrating significant decreases in suicidal ideation in adults who were given doses of ketamine. Here at South Omaha Ketamine we believe there is a possible rapid solution available for many adults.

According to the article published in News Week:

Researchers found that among 156 adults hospitalized for severe suicidal thoughts, those given two doses of ketamine often saw those disturbing ideas go away within a few days.

By day three, 63% were in full remission, compared to just under 32% of patients given a placebo in addition to standard care.

Ketamine, once famous for being a party past time, has quickly become an unbeatable treatment to depression and suicidal thoughts. According to the British Journal of Psychiatry the medication quickly eases depression symptoms (sometimes within a day). The speedy response is accredited as a life saver to those facing suicidal ideation. According to the BMJ study the conclusion over 156 participants were that:

The findings indicate that ketamine is rapid, safe in the short term, and has persistent benefits for acute care in suicidal patients. Comorbid mental disorders appear to be important moderators. An analgesic effect on mental pain might explain the anti-suicidal effects of ketamine.

The research mentioned in the article first debuted in the British Medical Journal earlier this year.

Nebraska ketamine therapy, treatment resistant depression

What is Ketamine therapy? How will SOMA Ketamine Clinic help with my depression?

Depression is a common, severe and potentially life-threatening syndrome. There are several clinical studies that suggest ketamine infusion therapy can have therapeutic effects in treatment-resistant depression.

Ketamine has been long used since 1970s as an anesthetic in surgery and in veterinary sciences. It was widely used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War and remains a standard anesthetic in emergency rooms around the world.

However, in recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of low-dose ketamine for the treatment of a variety of conditions including severe and treatment-resistant depression. Its rapid and robust antidepressant effect has been studied and has shown significance in decreasing the severity of depression and suicidal thoughts.

Here at SOMA, we are a bilingual family practice medical clinic that specializes in primary care, walk-ins/emergency, and we’re now adding ketamine infusion therapy. Our certified medical professionals administer the ketamine infusion therapy, which has proven to be a safe and effective way to treat depression and other mental health conditions. The treatment involves a series of six IV infusions professionally administered in a safe and regulated environment over the course of 2-3 weeks. We are an accredited medical center with trained professionals who will properly dose and monitor the intake of ketamine while minimizing unwanted side effects, ensuring your comfort and safety.

Native American Mural Project 2021

We were fortunate enough to get the opportunity to collaborate with the South Omaha Mural Project on a Native American tribute on the side of our building. The “mural was created in tribute to the strength and importance of women in the Native American community.”

South Omaha Mural Project in the World Herald

Our South Omaha Mural project is drawing to close and coming out fantastic! Here it is featured in the Omaha World Herald. We are excited to see what other future projects we can participate in and bring to our community.

Here is a short portion of the article:

“A series of murals throughout South Omaha are capturing the area’s rich history of immigration, ranging from the early waves of Irish and Poles to more recent arrivals from Mexico and Central America.

The South Omaha Mural Project will consist of 10 community-based murals. Each work aims to depict the culture, history and ethnic heritage of groups that settled in South Omaha neighborhoods, said David Catalan, the former president of the South Omaha Business Association.

One of the sets that has been started is the Plaza De La Raza Mural Group, which shares the stories of people of Mexican, Salvadoran, Guatemalan and Honduran heritage living in South Omaha. Each culture will be depicted on one of four walls that border the Plaza de la Raza.

The Mexican Heritage Mural has been completed. It is the work of six local artists who listened to stories from Omaha’s Mexican community during months of meetings.”

New promise for Type 2 Diabetes

A new study on type 2 diabetes from Newcastle University suggest that people suffering from this disease could be cured if they lost weight. The following is a summary on the article:

“Scientists at Newcastle University have shown the disease is caused by fat accumulating in the pancreas. Losing less than one gram from the organ can reverse the life-limiting illness and restore insulin production.

Type 2 diabetes until now, was thought to be chronic. It can lead to blindness, stroke, kidney failure and limb amputation.

But now researchers at Newcastle have shown that the be reversed, even in obese people who have had the condition for a long time.

18 obese people with Type 2 diabetes who were given gastric band surgery and put on a restricted diet for eight weeks were cured of their condition. During the trial the patients, aged between 25 and 65, lost an average of 13 per cent of their body weight. Crucially they also lost 0.6 grams of fat from their pancreas, allowing the organ to secrete normal levels of insulin.

The team is now planning a larger two year study involving 200 people with Glasgow University to check that the findings can be replicated and weight loss can be sustained for two years.”
