What is Spravato® Therapy?

SPRAVATO®  (esketamine) is an effective method in treating adults with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). It is an intranasal prescription medicine, used along with an antidepressant taken by mouth, for Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD) in adults. TRD is defined as the failure of two or more oral antidepressants of adequate dose and duration.

If you are struggling with depression and have tried two or more antidepressants without relief, it’s time to talk to your doctor or schedule an evaluation to see if Spravato®  is the answer.

Each treatment lasts about two hours where patients are monitored in a comfortable setting in our clinics.  (Due to the side effects of the Spravato®  treatment, you are not allowed to drive afterward – you must have a friend, family member, or a ride share service pick you up.) We have a number of available room choices depending on what you like to do during your treatments.

What is Ketamine-IV Therapy?

Ketamine has been studied for treatment of a variety of mental health conditions. It is thought to reset and re-establish connections within the brain to treat resistant depression and rapidly relieve suicidal thoughts.

We at SOMA see ketamine IV therapy as an adjunct to other therapies and will work closely with your PCP, psychiatrist, and/or therapist to optimize your mental well-being. Our approach uses a low dose of ketamine through a series of infusions that is based on research-backed, consensus guidelines.

What to expect

An initial consultation is done to determine the appropriateness of ketamine therapy and address questions. For best results, our study-supported regimen includes 6 treatment sessions over 2-3 weeks with booster infusions periodically as needed. While some patients may feel improvement in symptoms after only 1 or 2 infusions, we focus on the longer term improvement.

Ketamine: A Nurse’s Perspective

What is Ketamine?

That was my initial question when I first started working at a ketamine infusion clinic. I had no idea the kind of impact it would have on me as a person and as a RN. I have seen individuals at their absolute lowest, coming into the clinic hopeless and even suicidal. To them they have tried everything…every medication, treatment, therapy, etc.  I have had the honor and pleasure of witnessing the growth, healing, and transformation of so many patients.

Ketamine has been around for decades but recently it has emerged as something of a miracle drug for patients with severe depression that does not improve with standard treatment. When given in low doses as an infusion over 45-60 minutes, it can provide rapid relief of suicidal thoughts and improve depression. Other treatments for depression including medications can take several weeks to months to see any effects.

Being able to see the transformations in patients first hand is so rewarding. I am privileged to witness patients leave our clinic after their 6 initial infusions and they are a completely different person (for the better). From not being able to get out of bed or take care of themselves to now getting dressed up and wanting to go out and socialize with friends. There are times I don’t even recognize the person from when I first met them. I will get individuals who I can barely get a word out of, let alone a smile or laugh, but towards the end they are cracking jokes and interacting with me. Ketamine truly is a miracle drug and has changed and saved so many lives. I am so glad I have been a part of it.

A.S. RN

Ketamine treats people at risk of suicide

Depression is a common, severe and potentially life-threatening syndrome. There are emerging medical studies demonstrating significant decreases in suicidal ideation in adults who were given doses of ketamine. Here at South Omaha Ketamine we believe there is a possible rapid solution available for many adults.

According to the article published in News Week:

Researchers found that among 156 adults hospitalized for severe suicidal thoughts, those given two doses of ketamine often saw those disturbing ideas go away within a few days.

By day three, 63% were in full remission, compared to just under 32% of patients given a placebo in addition to standard care.

Ketamine, once famous for being a party past time, has quickly become an unbeatable treatment to depression and suicidal thoughts. According to the British Journal of Psychiatry the medication quickly eases depression symptoms (sometimes within a day). The speedy response is accredited as a life saver to those facing suicidal ideation. According to the BMJ study the conclusion over 156 participants were that:

The findings indicate that ketamine is rapid, safe in the short term, and has persistent benefits for acute care in suicidal patients. Comorbid mental disorders appear to be important moderators. An analgesic effect on mental pain might explain the anti-suicidal effects of ketamine.

The research mentioned in the article first debuted in the British Medical Journal earlier this year.

Nebraska ketamine therapy, treatment resistant depression

What is Ketamine therapy? How will SOMA Ketamine Clinic help with my depression?

Depression is a common, severe and potentially life-threatening syndrome. There are several clinical studies that suggest ketamine infusion therapy can have therapeutic effects in treatment-resistant depression.

Ketamine has been long used since 1970s as an anesthetic in surgery and in veterinary sciences. It was widely used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War and remains a standard anesthetic in emergency rooms around the world.

However, in recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of low-dose ketamine for the treatment of a variety of conditions including severe and treatment-resistant depression. Its rapid and robust antidepressant effect has been studied and has shown significance in decreasing the severity of depression and suicidal thoughts.

Here at SOMA, we are a bilingual family practice medical clinic that specializes in primary care, walk-ins/emergency, and we’re now adding ketamine infusion therapy. Our certified medical professionals administer the ketamine infusion therapy, which has proven to be a safe and effective way to treat depression and other mental health conditions. The treatment involves a series of six IV infusions professionally administered in a safe and regulated environment over the course of 2-3 weeks. We are an accredited medical center with trained professionals who will properly dose and monitor the intake of ketamine while minimizing unwanted side effects, ensuring your comfort and safety.
