Ketamine: A Nurse’s Perspective
What is Ketamine?
That was my initial question when I first started working at a ketamine infusion clinic. I had no idea the kind of impact it would have on me as a person and as a RN. I have seen individuals at their absolute lowest, coming into the clinic hopeless and even suicidal. To them they have tried everything…every medication, treatment, therapy, etc. I have had the honor and pleasure of witnessing the growth, healing, and transformation of so many patients.
Ketamine has been around for decades but recently it has emerged as something of a miracle drug for patients with severe depression that does not improve with standard treatment. When given in low doses as an infusion over 45-60 minutes, it can provide rapid relief of suicidal thoughts and improve depression. Other treatments for depression including medications can take several weeks to months to see any effects.
Being able to see the transformations in patients first hand is so rewarding. I am privileged to witness patients leave our clinic after their 6 initial infusions and they are a completely different person (for the better). From not being able to get out of bed or take care of themselves to now getting dressed up and wanting to go out and socialize with friends. There are times I don’t even recognize the person from when I first met them. I will get individuals who I can barely get a word out of, let alone a smile or laugh, but towards the end they are cracking jokes and interacting with me. Ketamine truly is a miracle drug and has changed and saved so many lives. I am so glad I have been a part of it.

Ketamine treats people at risk of suicide
Depression is a common, severe and potentially life-threatening syndrome. There are emerging medical studies demonstrating significant decreases in suicidal ideation in adults who were given doses of ketamine. Here at South Omaha Ketamine we believe there is a possible rapid solution available for many adults.
According to the article published in News Week:
Researchers found that among 156 adults hospitalized for severe suicidal thoughts, those given two doses of ketamine often saw those disturbing ideas go away within a few days.
By day three, 63% were in full remission, compared to just under 32% of patients given a placebo in addition to standard care.
Ketamine, once famous for being a party past time, has quickly become an unbeatable treatment to depression and suicidal thoughts. According to the British Journal of Psychiatry the medication quickly eases depression symptoms (sometimes within a day). The speedy response is accredited as a life saver to those facing suicidal ideation. According to the BMJ study the conclusion over 156 participants were that:
The findings indicate that ketamine is rapid, safe in the short term, and has persistent benefits for acute care in suicidal patients. Comorbid mental disorders appear to be important moderators. An analgesic effect on mental pain might explain the anti-suicidal effects of ketamine.
The research mentioned in the article first debuted in the British Medical Journal earlier this year.

I've been a patient at SOMA for a few years now and am happy to share my positive feedback about the clinic! The office staff are always friendly and helpful, and I never leave unsatisfied with the care and treatment I receive. I would recommended them to anyone!
I have been a long time patient of South Omaha Medical and feel that I have developed a strong bond with my doctor. She always listens and explains exactly what is wrong with me and what treatments are available. I sometimes have to wait a bit but I know it is because she is trying to deliver that same quality treatment to everyone else. Well worth the wait- I love Dr. Correa!
Best doctors in town. My family and I have been going for years. True personal care and expertise. Would recommend to anyone. Also, regarding the occasional line - if you go to any medical facility that accepts walk-ins during 'peak hours', you should probably expect to wait for a bit. 5 Stars.
