Ketamine in the Media

We like to share information on ketamine treatments when we see it pop up, especially when they involve treatments that we offer where our patients have seen great success. Recently, Today.com published a short excerpt highlighting the benefits of ketamine as a treatment for chronic resistant depression, suicidal thoughts, and anxiety.

The episode from Today.com explores ketamine as a treatment for depression.

The medication is considered a dissociative anesthetic and has been used for decades as a pain reliever, but more recently, it has been used to also treat depression.

According to the video, ketamine works differently from traditional antidepressants, which can take several weeks to become effective. Ketamine can work within hours or days, and helps people with treatment-resistant depression or those who have not responded to other treatments.

A recent study is cited that found that ketamine reduced suicidal thoughts in patients with depression, and also it improved mood and anxiety levels. We will note that the study’s authors caution that more research is needed as the long-term effects of ketamine on the brain are still unknown.

Many clinics, such as SOMA, offer payment options.

The video also discusses how ketamine treatment can be expensive and is not covered by insurance. We accept Care Credit, offer payment plans, and can work with you to submit claims on your own. We also work with most major insurance companies to cover Spravato© treatments.

Finally, the video includes comments from a psychiatrist who cautions that ketamine is not a “magic bullet” for depression and that patients should work with a mental health professional to determine the best treatment plan for their individual needs.

One thing we emphasize not only to our patients but also our partnering mental health providers is that we do not replace your psychiatrist or therapist. We require a joint effort and will coordinate our treatment plans with your mental health provider to best treat you. Every care plan is unique.

At South Omaha Medical Associates we offer a variety of ketamine treatments, including intranasal Spravato© (Esketamine) and IV ketamine. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at (531) 267-0711. We are currently accepting patients for both IV Ketamine treatments and Spravato©. What is Ketamine-IV Therapy?

Ketamine has been studied for treatment of a variety of mental health conditions. It is thought to reset and re-establish connections within the brain to treat resistant depression and rapidly relieve suicidal thoughts.

We at SOMA see ketamine IV therapy as an adjunct to other therapies and will work closely with your PCP, psychiatrist, and/or therapist to optimize your mental well-being. Our approach uses a low dose of ketamine through a series of infusions that is based on research-backed, consensus guidelines.

What to expect

An initial consultation is done to determine the appropriateness of ketamine therapy and address questions. For best results, our study-supported regimen includes 6 treatment sessions over 2-3 weeks with booster infusions periodically as needed. While some patients may feel improvement in symptoms after only 1 or 2 infusions, we focus on the longer term improvement.

Nurse Collaboration

Ketamine: A Nurse’s Perspective

What is Ketamine?

That was my initial question when I first started working at a ketamine infusion clinic. I had no idea the kind of impact it would have on me as a person and as a RN. I have seen individuals at their absolute lowest, coming into the clinic hopeless and even suicidal. To them they have tried everything…every medication, treatment, therapy, etc.  I have had the honor and pleasure of witnessing the growth, healing, and transformation of so many patients.

Ketamine has been around for decades but recently it has emerged as something of a miracle drug for patients with severe depression that does not improve with standard treatment. When given in low doses as an infusion over 45-60 minutes, it can provide rapid relief of suicidal thoughts and improve depression. Other treatments for depression including medications can take several weeks to months to see any effects.

Being able to see the transformations in patients first hand is so rewarding. I am privileged to witness patients leave our clinic after their 6 initial infusions and they are a completely different person (for the better). From not being able to get out of bed or take care of themselves to now getting dressed up and wanting to go out and socialize with friends. There are times I don’t even recognize the person from when I first met them. I will get individuals who I can barely get a word out of, let alone a smile or laugh, but towards the end they are cracking jokes and interacting with me. Ketamine truly is a miracle drug and has changed and saved so many lives. I am so glad I have been a part of it.

A.S. RN
